Shanghai–Nanjing Railway
The Shanghai–Nanjing Railway, one of the earliest major trunk railways in China, opened through Changzhou in 1908. This marked a turning point in the city's modernization. Before the railway, travel between Jiangnan cities relied almost entirely on canal networks, wooden boats, and footpaths. The arrival of the rail line drastically shortened travel times: the journey from Changzhou to Shanghai, which once took more than a day by water, could now be completed in only a few hours.
